Gay Family & Divorce Mediation

You May Feel That

Sometimes love isn't enough.

After years of marriage, no one ever thinks that it will eventually end in divorce – but this is where you are and what you’re facing.

You don’t know how it ended up this way, as you thought, “Our love would last forever.”

Regardless of the reason, this is now your reality.

You’ve tried everything, but you both realize now is the time to begin the process of filing for divorce.

You’ve built a life together – accumulated years of memories (some good and some very bad), may have children and shared a life – yet, you’ve grown apart and are both in a completely different place.

The decision to divorce is not a failure. Instead, you both realize the person you married is no longer the person you want to spend the rest of your life with.

Don't Succumb to Your Doubts

It is possible to divorce with dignity.

There’s no easy way to avoid the fact that divorce can be extremely messy, but it doesn’t have to be.

That’s correct – many couples who decide to utilize mediation find peace knowing they are in complete control.

When going through a court system, you may lose all autonomy in the decision-making process and outcome – as another person is deciding the fate of your future. When this occurs in a courtroom, you are left to feel exposed, humiliated, and dehumanized in a room full of strangers.

It doesn’t have to be that way – which is why many choose mediation rather than allowing a court to decide their future fate.

In fact, by going through mediation, you will find that you are always in control and can make the final decision that is best for you, each other, and your family.

In a courtroom, you’re at the mercy of a judge.

Consider Your Options

What mediation is…

While mediation is not for everyone, we believe it might be a perfect alternative for your situation.

Mediation is a process that places both parties in control of their life.

The mediator serves as a neutral third party who will help you and your spouse navigate through some of the following: division of assets, establishing child and spousal support, arriving at a conclusion about custody/parenting responsibilities, and any other issues that need to be resolved between now and the end of the divorce.

As a mediator, we’re not here to make any decisions for you. Instead, the mediator will help each of you navigate and figure out the best way to move forward through this life-changing and complicated process.

  • Control and autonomy of your life, family, and future – ultimately, the decisions made during this process are up to you both.
  • Comparatively, it’s much cheaper – You don’t have an extra $15,000 – $50,000 to spend on attorney fees, court fees, and litigation costs.
  • Less time and energy – The average divorce can range anywhere from 9 months to 4 years, while mediation can move as quickly as 4-12 weeks.
  • A neutral party to help facilitate the process – Wouldn’t you instead work with someone who remains unbiased and provides fairness?
  • It’s humane – While divorce can be emotionally and financially messy, you want someone who values you both as a couple, but most importantly, as an individual.
  • Your child’s well-being – You realize your divorce can be devastating to your children. Utilizing mediation will equip you with the skills to effectively work together in your future journey as co-parents.
  • Competence – You want someone knowledgeable and trained.
  • It’s not a war to be won! – You’ve decided that, while this is difficult, you will work together to compromise and find a solution.

More and more individuals utilize mediation as an alternative approach when navigating through their divorce.

What it's like working together.

One of the reasons we’ve incorporated mediation into this practice is that while it’s sad for any relationship to end, it is essential and possible to provide support for couples challenged with this decision.

While divorce is often complicated and messy, working with a mediator can provide clarity, and a sound mind as each of you begins the next stage in your life.

You’re probably considering mediation because you understand that while you’re choosing to dissolve this marriage, you also know that you both are reasonable and can work together.

While your mediator will guide you through this process, you may come in to end the marriage and later realize you want to repair the relationship, which is perfectly okay. We can discuss transitioning into couples therapy if you find yourself here.

Ultimately, the role of a mediator is to provide compassion and fairness through this process that is not usually experienced in a courtroom.

  •  Division of property, assets, and liabilities.
  • Determine parenting responsibilities and child custody
  • Establish child support
  • Spousal maintenance
  • Taxes and retirement

We’re here to guide you through this process – but most importantly, to provide fairness, dignity, and respect.
