I
FIO therapy, short for Intimacy From the Inside Out, takes everything IFS teaches about your inner "parts" and applies it directly to your relationship.
Most couples fight about the same five things on repeat, not because they're incompatible, but because both people are reacting from protective parts instead of speaking from who they really are underneath. Developed by Toni Herbine-Blank, IFIO gives each of you a way to notice that shift as it's happening.
The goal is for both of you to show up as yourselves, not just your defenses.
What You Each Might Bring Into the Room
Every couple has this, and neither side is "the problem."
Your Parts
Maybe you shut down when things get tense, or maybe you get louder. Maybe you need reassurance right away, or maybe you need space first. None of this is a character flaw, it's a protector doing its job.
Their Parts
Your partner has their own version of this, built from their own history. Their shutdown or their sharpness isn't really about you either, even when it lands on you.
From Reacting to Reconnecting
Before IFIO
Speaking from parts. Reacting fast, defending, withdrawing, or escalating before either of you knows what actually just happened.
Through IFIO
Speaking from Self. Noticing the part that's activated, naming it, and choosing to respond from a calmer, more curious place instead.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is IFIO therapy?
IFIO applies IFS specifically to couples, using your relationship itself as a place to grow. IFIO therapy was developed by Toni Herbine-Blank, a senior trainer for the Center for Self-Leadership, as a way to bring the core concepts of Internal Family Systems into a couples setting. Instead of only managing conflict in the moment, IFIO helps each partner understand the deeper parts driving their reactions, and access a calmer, more grounded Self underneath them. It's slower than most couples work, and that's intentional.
How is IFIO different from regular couples therapy?
Most couples therapy focuses on communication tools and conflict resolution in the moment. IFIO goes underneath that, helping each of you understand the protective parts actually driving those reactions in the first place.
Do we need to know anything about IFS before starting?
No prior knowledge needed. We'll introduce the concepts as they become relevant to your specific situation.
How long does IFIO therapy typically take?
It varies by couple. Some see meaningful shifts within a few months, while deeper pattern change often continues longer. We move at the pace that's right for both of you.
