I
nfidelity & affair recovery begins with a moment that changes the ground you're standing on. Whether it was a single moment or something ongoing, discovering it can shake your sense of reality itself, your memories, your judgment, even who you thought your partner was.
The days right after discovery can feel unreal. You might find yourself replaying conversations, searching for signs you missed, or unable to stop checking a phone you never used to think twice about. You might feel steady one hour and completely undone the next. None of that means something is wrong with you. It means something genuinely happened to you.
There's no "right way" to feel after infidelity, and there's no timeline you're supposed to follow. Some days you might want answers. Other days you might not be able to stand looking at them. Both are normal. And whether you're the one who was betrayed, the one who broke trust, or somewhere in the middle of figuring that out, this process is meant to hold space for all of it.
Wherever you are in this, we're here to help you find solid ground again.
What You Might Be Feeling
These reactions are common, and none of them mean you're overreacting.
Shock & Disbelief
A numbness or unreality that can make the days right after discovery feel like they're happening to someone else.
Obsessive Thoughts
Replaying details on a loop, or needing "the whole story" before you can even think about moving forward.
Hypervigilance
Checking phones, tracking whereabouts, or feeling on edge in ways that didn't used to be part of who you are.
Rage & Grief
A strange mix of both at once, sometimes within the same hour, and neither one cancels the other out.
Self-Doubt
Questioning your own judgment, memory, or sense of self, wondering how you missed it or who you even are now.
Isolation
Pulling away from friends or family, or feeling like no one could possibly understand what this is like.
Infidelity & Affair Recovery Has No Single Right Outcome
You don't have to decide right away. Our work can support either path, or the process of figuring out which one is yours.
Rebuilding Together
For couples who want to stay and are willing to do the work: rebuilding trust, understanding what happened, and deciding what the relationship becomes next.
Healing Separately
For those who are separating, or still deciding: processing the betrayal, grieving what was, and finding steady ground as an individual.
What Is IFIO?
It's slower than most couples work, and that's intentional.
Intimacy From the Inside Out applies IFS specifically to couples, and it's especially suited to affair recovery work..
After infidelity, both partners are usually reacting from protective parts, ones that rage, shut down, need constant reassurance, or withdraw. IFIO helps each of you understand your own parts first, then hear your partner's without immediately reacting from your own.
What to Expect
Affair recovery isn't a straight line. Here's how the process generally unfolds.
1
Stabilization
Grounding the acute shock and crisis of discovery
2
Understanding
Exploring what happened and what it means, without rushing
3
Deciding & Rebuilding
Choosing a path forward, together or apart, and building it
Frequently Asked Questions
Do we have to decide whether to stay together before starting therapy?
No. Many couples start therapy specifically to figure that out. You don't need to have an answer before reaching out.
Is it normal to still love someone who betrayed me?
Yes. Love, anger, grief, and confusion can all coexist. Feeling this way doesn't mean you have to stay, and it doesn't mean you're wrong for feeling it either.
Do you take sides?
No. Our role is to support both of you and the relationship itself, not to judge or assign blame.
What makes your approach to infidelity recovery different?
After infidelity, both partners are usually reacting from protective parts, ones that rage, shut down, need constant reassurance, or withdraw. According to the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, addressing these underlying dynamics, not just the incident itself, is central to lasting repair. Our IFIO-informed approach helps each of you understand your own parts first, then hear your partner's without immediately reacting from your own.
What if my partner isn't ready to be fully honest yet?
That's common, and it's something we can work with directly. Honesty often builds gradually as safety and trust develop in the process.
Can one partner come alone?
Yes. Individual sessions are available for either partner, whether the other is ready to participate or not.
How long does recovery from infidelity typically take?
There's no fixed timeline. Some couples see real progress within months, while deeper trust-rebuilding often continues longer. We move at the pace that's actually right for you.
